What is depression

Depression is a very real and very serious mental health condition that has real symptoms which can affect many aspects of your life. It is mistakenly and commonly believed that depression is something that you can just 'get over' with some time and positive thinking. This may work for a case of your everyday blues, but it will not suffice for a severe mental health condition. Treating depression requires a combination of medication, meaningful psychotherapy and dedicated devotion and support from friends and family.

The exact cause of depression is not exactly known and it can vary from person to person. The mechanisms through which depression works can be triggered by many things such as major life changes including being fired, losing a loved one or even a very positive experience. These events tend to cause an imbalance of specific hormones in your brain that are responsible for pleasure and clear thinking. These imbalances can be tested and measured as part of your depression diagnosis.

Diagnosing depression

If you think you might be suffering from depression the best thing you can do is to see your doctor. Your primary care provider can give you a depression test that has been developed by the nation mental health association that will determine if you are at risk for depression. There are a few online depression tests you can take, but none of them are official, nor can they lead to an official diagnosis. Only a medical doctor, trained in identifying depression can give you a diagnosis and a referral to the mental health professionals at the Richardson Health Clinic. Online tests should never replace a proper diagnosis. Once you have received a diagnosis, or think you might be at risk, the Richardson Health Clinic can give you the help you need.
